Can’t Miss Work?

Talk to your coworkers about the general strike and gauge their interest in organizing for future actions.

Worried about retaliation if you do walk out?

Check out @TheMamaAttorney on IG (https://www.themamattorney.com) to find out how to frame your conversation with your employer to be protected under the National Labor Relations Act – no union needed! If you are in a union, talk to your reps and leadership to see how you can align with future actions.

Can’t miss school?

If you participated in a walkout earlier this week, that still counts! See if there are student groups or organizations at your school that are aligned with the movement, and join ‘em! If there aren’t any, why not start one?

We’re in a moment where it’s not about having the perfect experience or credentials, it’s about doing something – so why not be the person to do it?

If you’re a teacher, take this as an opportunity to talk with your students about what’s going on and educate them.

Need to buy something today?

If you HAVE to spend money, absolutely spend it with local businesses in your community and avoid big corporations. Today’s the day to cancel your Amazon Prime, to finally get rid of Spotify, to switch from AT&T to another carrier.

You can cancel your Peacock subscription or your Universal Studios vacation – both are owned by Comcast who contracts with ICE.

Whatever you do, take at least one small action – even if you’re seeing this after January 30th! It can be as simple as a conversation with someone who is more on the fence about these things.

We don’t need to do the general strike in a perfectly organized way – we need to take advantage of the momentum to make an impact.

Still feel like your actions won’t matter?

Check out @TheGeneralStikeUS on IG for their post on the The Great Strike of 1877.

It was disorganized and haphazard, and not everyone was doing it at exactly the same time. But it had so much momentum people kept joining in across the country, building a nationwide movement.

Lady Izdihar also amazing videos on why we shouldn’t be bogged down by general strike “readiness” and the structure of revolutions – all layers matter, not just the active and organized core.

So all this to say – it’s about progress, not perfection. Let’s do this! 💪🤝🙌
