About

Cut Off the Spigot looks category by category to find alternatives to badly behaving companies, big corporations, and private equity firms.

It started with alternatives to Amazon, Target & Walmart and now covers almost any category, including media & tech.

How does
Cut Off the Spigot evaluate companies?

  • Ownership: Who actually owns the company
  • Political lobbying spend: Whether or not they spent money on lobbying, sourced from OpenSecrets.org
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Support: Do they support diversity? Have they removed their diversity programs?
  • Ties to the state of Israel: I define this as an Israeli-owned or funded company, the executives/owners of a company promoting or supporting Israel’s genocide and/or contributing to AIPAC, or if the company is included on the BDS boycott list. To be clear, I have nothing against the people of Israel that recognize what’s happening is genocide.

Pro/anti-union behavior, class-action lawsuits, and other controversies are also reviewed when available.

Does this mean I have to boycott everything?

Putting it simply – no!

Cut Off the Spigot is a guide to provide you information on companies so you can make your own choices on where to spend your money.

There’s no shame and blame game here. You may or may not agree with my stance on certain companies, and that’s okay. What matters most is that you shop where you want to, not where you feel like you have to because there are no other options.

How did This Start?

I had wanted to quit Amazon for awhile, but had no idea where else to get the things I needed without just spending money at another bad company. I kept hearing about all the bad things corporations were doing but no one was talking about actual solutions to avoid them.

So, I quit my job in March 2025 and decided to do something about it!

In April 2025, Cut Off the Spigot was launched. It means the world to me that so many people have found this information helpful, and I hope you do too.

Who Makes the Magic Happen?

It’s me, Alexa Speed! Yes, that is my real name.

I worked in digital & social media marketing for fifteen years, and now I finally get to use those powers for good.

You can learn a little more about me and how I started Cut Off the Spigot from my podcast interviews.
